Hi! Jessica Perrone here, your AFC® and founder of HerFinIQ. I’m so excited to share some big news with you.
After years of working with women through HerFinIQ, leading workshops, and being featured on FOX 5 New York and Yahoo Finance, I’ve noticed how women love to talk about money and hate to talk about money all at the same time! I want to normalize this conversation in female friend circles – That’s why I wrote my new financial etiquette book, Don’t Be That Girl: The Modern Guide to Financial Etiquette, to get you talking!!!!!!!
And let me tell you as soon as someone hears about this book – they light up and share an experience where they’ve been there….
Maybe it’s:
- That group dinner where you ordered tap water and an $18 salad, but ended up coughing up $150 because someone declared, “Let’s just split it evenly!”
- The friend who casually whispered, “Can you cover me? I’ll pay you tomorrow!”—after going out to dinner.
- Spending three days agonizing over an unpaid Venmo request, typing out three apologies, and attaching twenty emojis just to ask for your own money back.
What Is Don’t Be That Girl About?
This is not a finance book. It’s fun, flirty, sassy, and relevant! With a Sex and the City vibe, Don’t Be That Girl offers an edgy way to navigate the new language of finance no one is talking about, not yet, anyway. It’s way more than an ordinary book about money.
It covers what happens when going out with friends, splitting checks, Venmo requests, and lending money. Best of all, it includes exact scripts on what to say to protect your wallet and your friendships.
Why I Wrote This Book
The idea clicked in a workshop when a woman shared, “Whenever I invite people out, I feel this intense need to pay for them.” Immediately, the rest of the women in the workshop chimed in. It’s all about creating a space! When I created the space, people wanted to talk about it.
We aren’t failing with our money; we are just afraid to have money conversations. It’s not that no one taught us; it’s that no one talks about money etiquette. We need to normalize the conversation.
I’ve seen both sides…
Growing up as the oldest of eight kids from a humble, low-household-income background, I was a scholarship student who sometimes sat in the lunchroom hungry. Later, after a finance career, I became “the friend with money,” bringing a new set of social pressures.
I call the money women spend to avoid awkwardness or fit in the “politeness tax.” And you aren’t alone: a TopCashback survey found 74% of U.S. adults overspent to fit in socially, and 46% split costs evenly even when they spent less. Instead of lecturing you on what you “should” do, this book is like a big hug from a girlfriend who gets it!

A Sneak Peek: Which “That Girl” Are You?
In Chapter 1, we explore three social archetypes with zero judgment:
- Archetype 1: The “That Girl” who is broke and hiding it. She wants to keep up appearances, doing mental math over a salad or whispering “Can you cover me?”, while her bank account takes a hit.
- Archetype 2: The “That Girl” who earns more, spends more, and has zero tact. She picks pricey restaurants or orders $100+ wine and expects an even split, leaving friends stressed or resentful.
- Archetype 3: The “That Girl” ruled by the social double standard. She’s terrified of looking “cheap,” agonizing over Venmo requests (“So sorry to bother you!!”) or sacrificing her goals to keep the peace.
We’ve all been there! I’m cheering you on as you step into your role as a confident CFO of your life. Yay, let’s do this!
